May Day
And in case you're wondering, I'm not in need of assistance. This is not a may day call for help! Does anybody really know what May 1st is? What are we celebrating anyway? I think maybe it's flowers.
When we were children, we used to dance the May Pole and wind the pretty colored ribbons all along the pole. Remember that? It's clearly embedded in my memory from childhood because I was the girl who went the way of the boys...
aaahh ya, I was that girl. I single-handedly screwed up our school's May Day celebration and made our pole look funny in front of all the parents of all the children in our school. And you wonder why I have a facial tick...kidding.
And every single person I met, which would have been every single girl I faced, whispered fiercely, "you're going the wrong way!". Well, of course I was well aware I was going the wrong way, but rather than publicly admit my faux paus - I just kept on going.
Yep, just like the Eveready Bunny, I just kept on going.
I have no clear recollection of the events following that dance. I don't. I swear.
I've gotten quite good at blocking out painful events in my life..
So now that April is over and so is my 30 day Blog Challenge - you'll all be well pleased to know that I've failed miserably. Whoohoo!! Seriously, does this surprise you??? But in my defense, I think I've done quite well. I posted a total of 17 times during the month of April!! That is quite good for me. I think there are some years past, that may have equaled my annual total. So I've decided to reward my efforts and stop on the way home and buy myself some flowers. :)
It is after all, May Day...
Blessings all,
Lorie

Congratulations! Sometimes it's best just being you. Please continue that. I enjoy it.
I completely understand that little girl who was going the wrong way ... dancing to the music in her head, which was different than anyone elses.
Last November was a 30-day blog challenge for me. I used the time to get back in touch with my blog, which was going through a bit of a writer's block period at the time. Sometimes, we don't have to write anything profound ... we just have to write.
Beautiful flowers. Now I feel deprived we never had May Day celebrations as children. Probably because I went to catholic school. I'm sure the nuns considered it a pagan ritual of some sort. They were always getting their panties in a twist bout something or other.
I've never celebrated May Day, altho I've always wanted to make lil' homemade flower baskets to hang on a few select doorways. As far as the challenge, you posted more then half of the days - and more then any of us did!! Glad you treated yourself!
When I was a kid we put May baskets on the neighbors porches and then rang the doorbell and hid. They were supposed to chase us and kiss us.
For pagans like me, Mayday is actually Beltane, which is a very ancient festival celebrating the energy, burgeoning life and fertility of spring. The maypole is a hangover from those days, and you probably don't want to know what the pole symbolises. :D
It doesnt really work for me down in the southern hemisphere, even when we reverse festivals, as in some ways the autumn is the beginning of life for us because now is when the grass begins to grow and plants spring into life, and yet we still harvest grain crops and have our lambs, calves and foals born in spring. Good old topsy turvey Downunda!
Heh, I can just see you skipping away determinedly in the wrong direction!
:) Very interesting! Guess it depends upon where you live, and how old as to how we celebrated. T.L., thanks for the lesson regarding the May pole...I do have a vivid imagination, and I'll just add that "it figures!". In reality, most of our holidays transpire from pagan rituals/holidays, except Thanksgiving and Independence Day here in America - those are uniquely ours. Nothing pagan in origination there!
I'm glad you're writing and contributing over at my blog. I love your perspective. May Day mayhem? I never did the May Pole, but I have no doubt I'd have screwed it up, too. I find ways--really work hard, in fact--to mess things up when there's an audience. But I was wondering the same thing about May Day. I googled it and found that some are protesting capitalism on that day. When did that happen? I always thought of it as a day to celebrate spring flowers and give gifts of flowers.
I remember hearing about the May Day celebrations in England when my grandfather was a child, and that if I had been born a day earlier I would have been "Queen of the May"
